The Ivy League is set to further its legacy in the Olympic Games, with an impressive contingent of 114 athletes and coaches, both past, present, and future, participating in the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris, France. Rocket scientists and engineers are among the top US athletes in the Paris Olympics.
The event will kick off on Friday, July 26, and continue through Sunday, August 11.
The Ivy League contingent includes; 105 Olympians, four Paralympians, and five coaches competing across 20 sports, representing all eight Ivy League institutions and 23 participating countries. Each Ivy League institution has at least five representatives heading to Paris.
The Ivy Sports Brigade
Five Dartmouth alumni and one undergraduate will compete in the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics. The athletes are rowers William Bender ’24, Oliver Bub ’20, and Molly Reckford ’15. William Bender and Oliver Bub will participate in the men’s pair event, while Molly Reckford will compete in the lightweight women’s double sculls race (The Dartmouth) (Dartmouth | Dartmouth).
Harvard University has a significant presence at the 2024 Olympics, with 13 students and alumni set to compete for Team USA, the most athletes from Harvard in the Summer Olympics since 1992. First-year fencer makes history as a member of the all-Harvard squad in Paris. Gabby Thomas, a track and field athlete of Team USA has an undergraduate degree in neurobiology, which is rather uncommon for sportsmen. Thomas also has a Master’s degree from the University of Texas in public health, says USA Today. Columbia University is well-represented at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, with eight athletes set to compete. For the 2024 Paris Olympics, Cornell University is sending a notable contingent of athletes. However, specific numbers are not readily available from recent sources.
Former Brown student-athletes Henry Hollingsworth and Gus Rodriguez are among the 592 athletes who will represent Team USA in Paris. Hollingsworth was named to the Men’s Eight, while Rodriguez was named an alternate.
Yale University has 18 students and alumni competing in the 2024 Paris Olympics. This group spans a range of sports, including figure skating, rowing, and track and field, among others.

Participating in the Olympic Games is every athlete’s dream, and requires huge amounts of determination and long years of training. Every athlete playing for individual victory dreams of seeing their country’s flag fluttering at the top. There will be heartaches and cheers, but in the end, it is the victory of a game and its spirit- “Citius, Altius, Fortius — Communiter,” translates to “Faster, Higher, Stronger — Together.”
