The University of California System

The University of California system is considered one of the best state universities in the U.S.A. Four out of the ten campuses of the University of California colleges featured in the top 50 in Forbes’ 2024-25 America’s Top Colleges list. At #5 is The University of California Berkeley, and at # 13 is the University of California, Los Angeles, dropping from the previous year’s position of #7. The University of California, San Diego holds its position at #21, and the University of California, Santa Barbara has slipped to #35 from the previous year’s high at #24. The University of Irvine has made a surprising entry into this list and is now ranked at #39.

John A. Douglass, a senior research fellow in public policy and higher education at Berkeley, observes, “Historically, California has been viewed as an alternative to the more rigid social world of the East Coast, and its elite private universities, that has brought talent to UC and the state.” According to The State Higher Education Finance report of 2022, 1.6 million Californians attended one of the state’s schools.

A breakdown of the trend

In 2023, the University of California announced that it had received 245,768 applications for fall 2023, including 206,405 for freshman admission and 39,363 for transfer admission.
The 2024–25 academic year witnessed record admissions with 137,200 first-year students and 29,506 transfers, totaling 166,706 undergraduates.
California residents had much to cheer as admissions rose by 4.3 % compared to the previous year.
The UC system guarantees admission to the top eighth of California students.
According to the San Francisco Chronicle, only 66% of those admitted did not get their preferred campus.

SAT/ACT Policy

In May 2020, “The University of California Board of Regents” unanimously voted to stop requiring the ACT and SAT as part of admissions applications. This remains unchanged for the current year. So, the good news is that if you’re applying to a UC school, you won’t have to submit your ACT or SAT scores. As a result, The UC system received 249,855 applications for the fall of 2021, the highest number of applications in its history. This has also contributed to the application process becoming extremely competitive.

The University of California has its application portal. It does not have Early Decision 1 or 2 or Early applications etc. It has a single window i.e. November 30th. All admission-related documents have to be uploaded to the UC Application portal. The results are declared by March of the following year.

How to prepare for the UCs

Fulfill the coursework criteria: For out-of-state applicants, UC sets different criteria. While you are required to meet the same requirements as a California resident student, there is one important difference. You must earn a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.4 or better in the 15 college-preparatory courses (A-G courses), with no grade lower than a C.

Choose the Best-Fit Extracurriculars: UC looks for talented students with a high level of achievement. Students who can demonstrate leadership qualities and intellectual vitality are considered strong candidates.

California is a popular choice for international applicants because of its diverse population, economic opportunities, and warm and sunny climate (New England’s long and frigid winters aren’t for everyone!). The UCs are also close to many larger cities like Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Silicon Valley, which presents more accessibility to potential job prospects and internships for students.
