Admissions

The university adopted a new application process in 2023 where for the first time in a decade, the university abandoned its ‘Why Northwestern’ essay prompt. This was replaced by a 300-word essay prompt asking them “Which aspects of their background, identity, or community have impacted how they see themselves engaging in the NU community.” The revised NU application also includes five optional essays that are more informal— of which applicants are encouraged to submit one or two. For the class of 2028, NU received more than 50,000 applications and the acceptance rate was 7.5%.  The incoming class size has grown by 5% since the pandemic and is expected to be around 2100 this fall.

Staying test optional for years 2023-24 also resulted in the application surge. The cohort admitted students from all 50 states and over 90 countries. Nearly 16% of early admits are first-generation college students, compared to 14% three years ago. The cohort of students demonstrated resilience, ambition, creativity, thirst for learning, and commitment to becoming changemakers in the world.
