In recent years, colleges have been getting increasingly creative with their essay prompts, pushing students to think outside the box and deliver thoughtful, innovative responses. An exciting trend gaining traction in the college admissions process is the option to submit a college application video.
Universities more colleges — such as Brown University, Bowdoin College, Case Western Reserve University, Claremont McKenna College, Duke University, Swarthmore College, the University of Chicago, Vanderbilt University, and Wake Forest University — are among the institutions inviting applicants to showcase their personalities through video submissions.
Some insights from the colleges will help you to know what is expected of you and hence plan accordingly.
Bowdoin- We’re not critiquing your conversational skills. We’re not bothered by “ums” or “ahs”, or the laundry on your bed, or the need to take a moment to think and redirect your answer.
Brown University: As with any aspect of the admission process, there is no specific topic or format we are hoping to see in your video introduction. You may choose to use these suggested prompts:
- What do you love about your neighborhood or hometown?
- Share a time that you were moved by music or art.
- How would your friends describe you?
- Describe how you were influenced by a book that changed your perspective.
- Talk to us about a meaningful family activity or tradition.
- In what ways are you similar to or different from your siblings or friend group?
- Tell us about your favorite time of day.
- Highlight any topic of your choice that will allow us to get to know you better.
University of Chicago: “You have two options to submit a video introduction if you would like to add your voice to your application. You may upload a two-minute video directly through your UChicago Account or create a 60-90-second video using Glimpse by InitialView
While optional, a well-crafted video can offer admissions officers a glimpse of who you are beyond your academic achievements. Here’s how to approach creating an impressive college application video:
1. Choose an Appropriate Background
Colleges do not expect your video to be of professional quality but you are expected to be mindful about where you record. It is necessary to find a space that does not have background noise so that the audio is clear. There are apps available to cut any background noise that gets inadvertently recorded. Ensure you thoroughly check before submitting it. Additionally, the backdrop of your video is equally important which showcases professionalism.
2. Be Creative
Read the Video essay prompt before embarking on scripting it. While some colleges may request a straightforward video response to a prompt, other schools might encourage more creativity. If you are expected to showcase your personality traits you will be expected to shoot at different locations that are meaningful to you and your story. Following the specific instructions will be important and in the process, if you can showcase your creative side, you can take the liberty of doing so. Treat the video with the same seriousness as a supplemental essay or admissions interview by providing thoughtful, relevant responses.
3. Be Well Groomed
Remember colleges do not like to see a disheveled student showcasing a nonchalant attitude. The video essay is your chance to show a polished and authentic version of yourself. Treat the video like an informal interview: wear clean, appropriate clothing, and avoid overly casual attire like pajamas. You don’t need to don formalwear unless that’s your usual style but aim for a neat and presentable look to make a positive impression.
4. Be Natural
Many students are camera-shy and can resort to reading from a script. This is guaranteed for a boring and monotone presentation. Before facing the camera do a couple of rehearsal rounds. Practice your response and try to deliver it in the most natural way you possibly can. Do not memorize the script. If you make a script with a logical flow, you will be able to speak naturally. This approach helps your personality come through and keeps the viewer engaged.
5. Let Your Personality Shine Through
Since this video is your chance to get the admissions team to get to know you, make it count. Stay relaxed, and practice, to be genuine. Demonstrate your reasons for wanting to attend the college. Authenticity resonates more than trying to fit into a perceived mold of the “ideal” applicant.
By following these tips, you can create a compelling college application video that complements the rest of your application. Remember, it’s an opportunity to add a personal touch to your submission and highlight what makes you unique. Good luck, and enjoy the process of creating your video!
