PROMYS India-Program in Mathematics for Young Scientists

PROMYS India – PROMYS | Program in Mathematics for Young Scientists

PROMYS-INDIA

Mathematics has been at the core of PROMYS, which for the past three decades has been synonymous with deep exploratory mathematical learning for talented high school students and secondary teachers. Their belief that Mathematics, with its inherent creativity, fosters independent thinking and its precise use of language, is a critical tool in solving intellectual challenges. Held on the campus of Boston University in the USA, it has partnered with universities across Europe (PROMYS Europe at the University of Oxford) as well as India.

The Program in Mathematics for Young Scientists (PROMYS) India is a rigorous six-week residential summer program designed for exceptionally talented secondary and higher secondary students across India. Hosted at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru, the program is closely modeled on its parent program which immerses participants in deep mathematical exploration and discovery.

Program Structure and Activities

PROMYS India is no different from its international counterparts, emphasizing the art of mathematical discovery. Students engage with fundamental problems, which encourages them to develop their mathematical insights and proofs. Number Theory, advanced seminars, exploration labs, and mentored research projects are included in the curriculum.  The learning becomes enriching due to the guest lectures and talks, which cover a wide range of mathematical topics.

Application and Eligibility

The program is scheduled to run from May 11 to June 21, 2025.  Students from Standards IX to XII (or equivalent) in India, aged between 15 and 18 years by the program’s start date, are eligible to apply. Lectures, discussions, and problem sets at PROMYS India are all in English. Since the program is in English, applicants should possess English language skills. The selection process is highly competitive, as applicants are assessed based on their solutions to challenging mathematical problems, teacher recommendations, academic records, and personal statements. The website mentions clearly that students may not apply to PROMYS India and PROMYS at Boston University in the U.S. for the same summer. They may apply to only one.

Scholarships and Financial Support

All students accepted to PROMYS India 2025 receive full scholarships covering tuition, housing, and meals. Additional need-based funding is available for travel and laundry expenses, ensuring that financial constraints do not hinder participation. These scholarships are made possible by the generosity of the program’s founding sponsors, including Nick Nash & Phalgun Raju, Avi and Sandra Nash, the Lucile and David Packard Foundation, and other donors.

Testimonials and Impact

Participants often describe PROMYS India as a transformative experience. For instance, Shivani AC from the 2023 cohort shared, “PROMYS India has had an immense impact on me. It has helped me find a great sense of belonging and has helped me grow into a better mathematician and human amongst some of the most brilliant minds.”

Conclusion

At its core, PROMYS India fosters discovery and exploration where students tackle fundamental mathematical problems, dedicating significant effort to uncover solutions independently. .
