U Chicago​’s Summer Session Early Notification

The University of Chicago has introduced an innovative approach to its admissions process by offering a Summer Session Early Notification (SSEN) program for high school students. This allows participants of UChicago’s Pre-College Summer Sessions to apply through a binding early admissions round, that is different from the traditional early action (Nov 1) or regular decision timelines (Jan 6th) deadlines.​

Understanding the SSEN Program

Traditionally, attending summer programs at elite universities has been viewed as a way for high school students to familiarize themselves with college life and potentially enhance their college applications. However, these programs often come with significant costs and do not guarantee an admissions advantage to the institutions that they doing the summer program. Recognizing this, UChicago’s SSEN program offers a more direct pathway:​

• Binding Commitment: Students who have completed a UChicago Pre-College Summer Session can apply between September 1 and October 15, with the understanding that acceptance through this program requires a commitment to enroll.​

What can Applicants expect

The SSEN program is primarily for students who have identified UChicago as their first choice. By applying through this binding early notification, students indicate their strong commitment to the university. This approach benefits both the applicants, by providing early clarity, and the university, by improving its yield i.e. the percentage of admitted students who enroll. 

Students who participate in UChicago’s Summer Session receive an email at the end of the summer quarter informing them of their eligibility for the SSEN program, along with detailed guidance on how to complete their application. Additionally, parents and counselors are invited to end-of-summer informational Zoom sessions, hosted by admissions counselors, to ensure they understand the SSEN process and have the opportunity to ask any question.

What should students keep in mind

While the SSEN program offers a unique opportunity, it’s essential for students to thoroughly evaluate their college preferences before applying. A binding decision means that, upon acceptance, students are obligated to attend UChicago and must withdraw applications to other institutions. Therefore, this option is best suited for those who are certain about their desire to join the UChicago community.
